Chapter 10

Swearing under his breath, Jake moved over to his computer. A big, swanky vehicle had just pulled through the front gate of the Ferrare compound and set off one of his motion detectors. Another alarm sounded. His camera pointed at the front door had sensed it opening. Two burly men stepped out, and Jake’s pulse quickened. He recognized both men—bodyguard types from the look of them—from the photographs of Eduardo Ferrare several weeks ago.

A third man stepped outside.

Bingo.

Jake stared in disbelief at the man strolling toward the now-stopped limousine. Intellectually, he knew Ferrare was alive. But his gut still rebelled at the freakish sight of a man whom he’d watched die walking around casually talking and gesturing to his men. The guy moved just like the Eduardo Ferrare of old. The same arrogance. The same command of everyone and everything around him. The same alert attention to every detail within eyesight. This was not the double. This was the real Eduardo Ferrare.

And his sniper gun was sitting in his duffel bag, useless. He’d been so involved with Shannon that Ferrare had caught him completely unprepared. Cursing himself thoroughly, Jake weighed sprinting for his shooting rig or staying put and watching the unfolding action below.

The limousine door opened. Two big men armed to the teeth stepped out. They spoke briefly with Ferrare’s henchmen and then took up positions at the front and rear fenders of the vehicle, automatic weapons at the ready, their gazes roaming constantly.

Four more men, obviously the principals, stepped out of the long, sleek vehicle. Jake quickly captured stills of them on his computer and fired them off electronically to H.O.T. Watch headquarters with an identity query. Personally, he didn’t recognize any of them. They carried themselves like wealthy, powerful men. Their custom-tailored, perfectly pressed suits gave away the wealth part, and the way the guards tensed in their presence gave away the power part. What was Ferrare up to?

A new alarm sounded on Jake’s computer. The front-gate motion detector again. Another limousine was just rounding the corner into the compound. The first limo’s guards didn’t react, so obviously this second vehicle was expected. Jake watched with interest to see who emerged from this car. Maybe the next few minutes would answer the question of what Ferrare was planning.

The second set of men was much like the first, although the men were slightly younger, wore shorter hair and generally moved more athletically. He frowned. In fact, the second set of men moved like military types. What would Gavronese Army men want with Eduardo Ferrare? He was a drug dealer. The Gavronese government had always opposed him and his illegal empire vigorously. An icy chill crawled across the back of Jake’s neck. This was not good. Not good at all. He didn’t usually go much for instinct or intuition, but this time both were screaming at him in a way he couldn’t ignore.

The group of men moved into the house. He sent a second batch of images to H.
